A Data Marketplace is What Your Agent Needs
Dr. Simon Harrer (CEO & Co-Founder, Entropy Data) ·
A solo talk on the Tech Stage at DATA Festival 2026 in Munich. Simon makes one argument: AI agents need a data marketplace for two things: to read enterprise data through governed tools, and to build new data products. Two live demos back it up: an agent answering a business question on contract-backed data products, and a coding agent building a brand-new data product from a contract. The talk shares its title with the BARC research Entropy Data sponsors.

TL;DR
Five key points and lessons learned from the talk.
-
Read data, build data products. Agents need a data marketplace for exactly two things: to read enterprise data and to build new data products. The same marketplace serves both, so a data product one agent builds is one the next agent can read.
-
Never hand an agent the master key. Wiring an agent straight into every database collects GDPR violations by the minute. Put a data marketplace in between that offers governed tools for discovery, semantics, quality, SLAs, terms of use and access instead of raw keys.
-
Every query carries a purpose. An agent states a purpose for each query trivially, so the marketplace can check it against the data contract and stop a forbidden query before it reaches the data. Governance stays active while the data is being read.
-
Support agents, and humans benefit. Agents and human analysts need the same discoverability, semantics, trust and quality signals, but an agent without the right metadata confidently does the wrong thing. Being explicit for agents, anchored in a semantic layer on open standards, pays off for humans for free.
-
Contract for the what, skills for the how. A coding agent fails at "build it for me" because it knows neither what to build nor how your company builds it. Agree on the purpose first, specify an ODCS data contract, add skills from a plugin, and one prompt builds and publishes the data product.
Q&A
From the audience after the talk.
Q: Can you get any data in any form into the marketplace, Confluence pages, PDFs, databases, or do you need a discovery and transformation phase first?
Today the focus is mostly on relational data; unstructured sources like PDFs are not wired in yet. But the understand and specify steps are exactly where other sources help. Rather than filling everything in by hand, you can connect tools, for example to Confluence, to pull in context so you know what you want to build and can define the interface well. You can absolutely use AI for that part too. It just was not the focus of this talk.

Data Catalog vs Data Marketplace
Traditional data catalogs have long been the primary solution for managing data assets. Modern data architectures build on data products with clear ownership, well-defined data contracts, and a focus on the needs of data consumers, brought together into an enterprise data marketplace.
